Woodchucks Add Power Hitting First Baseman
Feb 03, 2012

(Wausau, WI) – This week the Wisconsin Woodchucks announced another addition to their roster for the 2012 season.  Recently, the ‘Chucks have signed Skyler Ewing, a power hitting, freshman first baseman from Rice University.

Ewing joins the Owls after a very decorated high school career.  Hailing from Arlington, TX, Skyler played baseball at Arlington High School, were he was a three-year starter and earned the 2011 District 4-5A Utility Player of the Year.  He helped lead his team to the district championship and Region I quarterfinals of the state tournament as a senior.

As a senior he batted .443 with 13 home runs and 46 RBI.  He also went 7-3 on the mound with a 3.26 ERA.  Skyler maintained a .450 batting average throughout his prep career while also belting 31 home runs.  Said Rice head coach Wayne Graham, “Skyler has outstanding power. He is continuing to work on his defensive skills, but his bat will help him have a role."

In addition to being an accomplished athlete, Skyler was an outstanding student.  He was a member of National Honors Society and was named to the 2011 5A Academic All-State team.

Josh Willingham Returns to Minnesota
Feb 03, 2012

For the first time a player that once played for a Minnesota team in the Northwoods League will now suit up in the big leagues for the Minnesota Twins. Veteran outfielder Josh Willingham signed a three-year contract with the Twins this offseason and will be expected to patrol right field at Target Field through 2014.

Willingham was in Austin, MN playing for the Southern Minny Stars for that franchise's only two years of existence in 1998 and 1999. He was a .275 hitter with three home runs and 30 RBIs in 62 games predominantly as a third baseman in '98. He followed that up with another summer at the hot corner and batted .337 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 28 games in '99.

Phil Miller recently featured the Twins' new right fielder in an article for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/138248594.html
